On a cold, wintry day, a litter of piglets was born. In this litter were two gilts. These sister piglets looked very much a like. They nursed side by side, slept together and played together. When it came time to wean and go to a different barn, the two sister pigs ended up in the same pen. They continued to eat, sleep and play together as they grew.
After months of growing it was time to take the pigs to market, but the farmer really liked the two sister pigs. They came from a good momma sow and the farmer decided to keep the pigs as gilts to become momma sows. The two gilts again were placed in a new pen together. After several months of being together, the gilts had to be placed in separate special pens. It was time for them to become momma sows. They each gave birth to a litter of pigs.
A few short weeks later, it came time for the new sows to be weaned off their first litter. Once again the two sister sows were placed in the same pen together. When the sisters met, they began to fight to establish dominance.
In a separate pen were placed two sows that were unrelated. These two sows both had sore hooves. Even though these two sows had never seen each other before, they did not fight, but ate and slept together in peace.
